Anyone else considering a switch from the 2019 Nvidia Shield TV Pro over to the latest generation Apple TV 4K?
I have a 2019 Nvidia Shield TV Pro coupled with an LG CX OLED and a Denon x3700h 5.1 setup. The app-specific audio sync issues drive me crazy despite lots of calibration efforts. The lack of framerate matching is also quite annoying (depending on the content). I love the Shield TV Pro's upscaling but not sure if I love it enough to deal with the other issues. After stumbling on this thread over on /cordcutters , many there are recommending the Apple TV 4K as the best "it just works" option albeit with a few compromises of its own.
Am I correct to understand AppleTV is the next best option? It looks like I'd "lose out" on Bitstream Audio. Isn't Linear PCM still loseless?
On the other hand, I'd also gain Youtube HDR which would be nice. For those unaware, the Shield TV Pro's hardware can't handle HDR (specifically the VP9 profile 2) in the Youtube app.
In that aforementioned thread, the graphic from September 2022 is out-of-date, as Peacock now has 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision support.
Are there other considerations I should weigh when comparing the 2019 Nvidia Shield TV Pro against the latest generation Apple TV 4K?
I plan to buy new soundbar with Atmos during the BlackFriday and I have a plan to watch BR Rips with Atmos sound via Plex on my 2019 Shield Pro and 2016 Samsung TV. Will I be able to achieve in this setup Atmos output? How should I connect those 3 devices ?
Here is my take on Shield Pro 2019 and ATV 4K 2022 devices. Setup:
2 x Sony XR-77A80j
1 x Sony HT-A9
2 x NVidia Shield Pro 2019
1 x Apple TV 4K 2022 128gb Ethernet model.
All streaming boxes connected directly to the Sony TV's true 4K HDMI ports to avoid using HT-A9 as a switching device for HDMI. All HDMI cables are Monoprice 8K Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable - HDMI 2.1, [email protected], 48Gbps. All my Sony TV's have Shield Pro. Decided to test out the new ATV 2022. Sony's were calibrated with the best color optimization and performance set to Vivid, not Dolby Light. All the info you have read about Dolby Vision, TrueHD and passthrough in the Shield is accurate. Shield is setup for DV. ATV is HDR10+ as per their specs so this was set to 4K [email protected], no match content, no match frame speed. When I did this on the ATV, it automatically identified it as Dolby Vision, however, its not true DV. I also did the HDMI connection test and it passed. A wired connection to each box was used. Each box was lined up side by side connected to a HDMI true 4K port.
The colors and clarity and detail were way better on the Shield from 4 different set of eyes. However, when I switched the ATV to 4K [email protected], it came close to the NVidia, but not close enough.
The responsiveness was about equal. No lag on Shield or ATV
I tested the usual suspects of apps that supported Dolby Vision profiles and the NVidia was more pleasing to the eye for sharpness, sound and resolution.
The ATV remote is built solid but no backlight like the Shield remote which is huge for me.
The fact that the Shield is not locked down for apps is another huge plus.
No USB ports on ATV but I assume having 128GB of storage, there is no reason for a USB port where the Shield comes with 2 USB 3 ports if I needed to expand my storage.
UPDATE: Just installed Kodi 19.4 using XCode, so far so good using the latest nightly build. When playing a movie, the only thing that is missing is the control panel for stop/pause/play/subtitles, etc. Only option is to pause. BTW, using the Apple remote sucks compared to Shield. It feels like I have to make an effort to press any area on the remote. So, not sure if I will keep the ATV or not as I have some other apps I want to side load and test as they are not in the ATV store. So I am on the fence, but it will not be replacing my NVidia anytime soon.
Will Apple replace burst battery for free or charge? My MBP stopped working and when I opened the back saw an inflated/burst battery. Roughly 500-600 charge cycle MacBook Pro 16inch 2019.
How do I visually distinguish a 2019 Shield Pro model from a Shield 2017 model?
I am meeting up with a seller from a used-product website to buy his Nvidia shield. I got a really good deal so I want to verify that he is indeed selling me a 2019 model and not a 2017 model. Is there any way I can verify this visually before handing him over the money? Thanks
I have a GeForce Now subscription but my computer doesn't work. Can I play my steam games on my Shield Pro 2019?
I get so confused when I look around the Nvidia app on my Shield. I can buy and play new games on there as far as I can see. I'm logged in to my Steam account but I can't find any games from my library on there. After fiddling around for a fair bit of time I found my playing history. I have Death Rally on there so I try to play that but it says it's not a Windows game? I also think it wanted me to buy it again? I just got a controller and I thought it would be cool if I could play old games that I own on steam like Need for Speed: Shift and stuff like that but I can't find anything. It says I have a 3080 at hand and I managed to start Asphalt 9 and it looks good but what about all the games I actually own and want to play? Like old racing games and stuff. Shouldn't be a problem with a god damned 3080 gaming machine? But my steam library looks empty. I have 15 years of games on there. I have a 128gb USB3 stick for storage but I can't for the life of me play any of my games. Some don't even need to be played through GeForce Now but I can't find anything. What's up with that? I'm a rather new Shield user but common..
Help! 2019 Merc 175 ProXS with water in the crankcase. Was changing fluids today and more than what I would consider as condensate in my oil as I changed it. Also found small bits of plastic in the gunk. Any advice, ideas, whatever would be wonderful. I’m stumped.

Selling an out-of-box but mint 16" intel Macbook Pro. The laptop has only been used to take screenshots of the specs for this posting.
